Internship - Media relations and communicationS assistant


Indie Montreal is looking for a media relations and communications intern! Applicants must be highly motivated and enthusiastic with an interest in and knowledge of Quebec’s music industry. The intern will be immersed in the artist development and media relations domains while working with an established Canadian music company. Because Indie Montreal is a small business, the intern will complete valued tasks on the company’s front lines. The intern will work on daily duties and medium-term projects. The intern will also be required on-site for events.


Dates: January to July 2020 - The stage turns over every 6 months

Hours:  40 hours per week

Salary: Unpaid internship

Location: Indie Montreal’s office is located at 4169 A Saint-Denis.

Languages: English & French, fluent spoken and written

Assets – Skills, Training & Interests:

·         A degree, either completed or in progress, and/or professional experience in media relations

·         Very advanced social and interpersonal skills

·         Knowledge of Quebec’s media networks an asset

·         Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)

·         Knowledge of Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, etc.) an asset

·         Knowledge of Google Drive and Google Calendar

·         Strong knowledge of social media and web-based marketing and promotion platforms

·         A strong sense of autonomy, resourcefulness, initiative, creativity and meticulousness

·         Very organized with keen sense of priorities and attention to detail

·         Music-related professional experience an asset

·         A general interest in music, arts & culture

·         Comfort working under pressure and on tight deadlines



·         Drafting and disseminating press releases and pitches

·         Creating campaign press summaries

·         Creating IMTL newsletters

·         Updating IMTL’s press lists

·         Updating IMTL’s website

·         Accompanying artists to media appearances

·         Assembling promotional materials for media campaigns

·         Coordinating media activities like interviews, contesting, etc.

·         Involvement in social media strategy

·         Involvement on-site at events (media table, press conferences, launches, during IMTL’s shows, etc.)

·         Basic graphic design



·         Valuable relationship management experience

·         Experience in coordinating promotional efforts with a variety of music professionals

·         The opportunity to develop and grow a personal network of contacts

·         Direct experience with local and regional music industry leaders

·         Direct experience working with national and international touring musicians

·         The benefit of working alongside IMTL’s other departments, which provide insight into other areas of the artist development process and music industry

·         Possible occasional regional travel with other Indie Montreal staff

This is an unpaid position

Academic Credit:
Indie Montreal will work with any educational institution to ensure that the intern receives any due academic credit for their work and experience.
